Perry Mason: The Seventh Season, Vol. 1

Bad sound, avoidable errors
Hello, I have only watched three episodes of this instalment so far, but I have noticed poor sound quality (brittle, harsh). Also, the credits on Episode 1 are from another episode and the order of the episodes on this first disk are out of sequence (Episode 2 on the disk was actually Episode 4 when it originally ran). Given that we pay a premium price for just half a season, I find second-rate quality unacceptable. Boo to CBS.

Bad sound engineering :-(
This set continues the generally splendid remastering and restoration of the wonderful Perry Mason series, which is as much fun decades later as I remember it being when it was new. All highly recommended.

But starting with this set (and I hope it's not a trend), the sound engineering as taken a terrible turn. (1) The sound frequently has a brittle, hard-edged quality that makes some of the actors' voices truly unpleasant. (2) Even worse, the difference in volume between the spoken dialogue and the (wonderfully melodramatic) musical "commentary" is so huge that you can't leave the volume on a single setting through the episode. Who decided that the musical soundtrack had to be BLASTING in an otherwise acoustically rather demure soundtrack (which would be appropriate for the historical period). I'm not overdoing authenticity here -- I'm complaining about unnecessary physical discomfort, and annoyance at having to fiddle with volume multiple times during an episode...

Still the standard
Intelligent writing and superb acting made this series the standard by which all courtroom/crime drama is measured to this day. Noir enthusiasts will appreciate the intricate and ever shifting plots coupled with intense drama that will draw you in quickly and not let you go. From the moment I hear the opening music I am drawn in and held to the end.
