Shakespeare Series: Romeo and Juliet

English TEacher's Perspective
I didn't like this production at all. Whole sections of the play were omitted (especially the final graveyard scene), Juliet's performance was very insipid. I would not recommend showing this to any class.

We Need A Better Romeo and Juliet on Prime
As a theatre graduate, I've studied Shakespeare and have seen this play numerous times, and even performed in it in high school. This version of the play is a poor representation of a majority of the play. As others have said, the only good part was Mercutio, and he's not on enough.

The girl who played Juliet in my high school production, who had a deeper register, had more vocal and emotion range than this Juliet.

The cinematography is atrocious.

Again, the only reason this gets two stars, is the Mercutio.

Please Amazon, put up a better version of this for Prime Members.

Watch this for Mercutio
This production of Romeo and Juliet has two things going for it

1: It is currently the only Romeo and Juliet available free with Amazon Prime
2: Dan Hamilton shines as Mercutio. If you are playing Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, watch his scenes. He did a really good job.

Unfortunately, that's not enough to save the film. Alex Hyde-White's Romeo is OK. Blanche Baker is a dismal, expressionless, trancelike Juliet that sucks any interest or emotion out of her scenes.

So watch this for Mercutio. Skip the rest.
